Add your own personal touch and you\u2019ll have a home that reflects your taste for a lot less money.<\/li>\n<li>Enjoy evenings at home with friends (it\u2019s a lot cheaper than going out!)<\/li>\n<li>Avoid astronomical phone bills by signing up for a long distance savings plan tailored to your needs.<\/li>\n<li>Consider living with a roommate to save on expenses.<\/li>\n<li>Rent a film instead of going out to the movies. If you prefer going to a movie theatre, go on reduced price days.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>At school<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Do some research and apply for scholarships. You haven\u2019t got a thing to lose, and a lot to gain!<\/li>\n<li>Check your tuition statement carefully to avoid paying extra charges (group insurance, for example, if you are still covered by your parents\u2019 insurance policy).<\/li>\n<li>Bring your lunch sometimes instead of always eating in the cafeteria or restaurant.<\/li>\n<li>Buy used textbooks and sell back any books you no longer need.<\/li>\n<li>Whenever possible, borrow books from the library instead of buying them.<\/li>\n<li>Find out about campus discounts and take advantage of free student services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When you shop<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Avoid impulse purchases. Take the time to evaluate your real needs and budget.<\/li>\n<li>Compare prices and don\u2019t hesitate to shop around, especially for major purchases.<\/li>\n<li>Never shop for groceries when you\u2019re hungry.<\/li>\n<li>When you do your grocery shopping, shop the perimeter of the store. Avoid the center aisles where more expensive, processed food can be found.<\/li>\n<li>Compare the unit price and not the shelf price. The price by weight is in the small print on every label.<\/li>\n<li>Buy house brands instead of known brands. Compare the ingredients and you\u2019ll see you\u2019re paying more just for prettier packaging.<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye out for sales.<\/li>\n<li>Check your receipt before you leave the store. If you are charged more than the price published on the shelf label, the law requires merchants to give you the product for free if it\u2019s under $10 or a $10 discount on the published price if it\u2019s over $10. Merchants must let you exert this right.<\/li>\n<li>Buy family size formats, even if you live alone, and freeze the contents in individual size packages (hamburger, for example).<\/li>\n<li>Make a list before you go shopping and stick to it. Buy only what you really need.<\/li>\n<li>Use discount coupons.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid ready-to-eat meals, pre-cut fruits and vegetables and grated cheese. You\u2019ll pay a lot more for processing you can do yourself in only a few minutes.<\/li>\n<li>Check out used clothing, book and record stores, flea markets, etc.<\/li>\n<li>If you want to buy clothes, start by listing what you should have in your closet. Then make an inventory of the clothes you already have. Whatever\u2019s left on your list is what you should be shopping for.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"content\" class=\"content_sidebar content_right_sidebar\" role=\"main\">\n<div id=\"bodyinfo\">\n<h3>When you travel<\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>If you use public transit, buy a monthly pass instead of paying for each individual ride.<\/li>\n<li>Use the family car as little as you can.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure your tires are always inflated to the correct pressure to save a few dollars on gas.<\/li>\n<li>Carpool whenever possible.<\/li>\n<li>If you drive, obey traffic laws to avoid tickets! Reducing your speed will also let you save considerably on gas. Try it and see.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>At all times<\/h3>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Take care of your belongings so you don\u2019t have to replace them.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t pay someone to do what you can do yourself.<\/li>\n<li>Save your change.<\/li>\n<li>Question the importance of certain expenditures (e.g., cigarettes, alcohol or that 10th pair of jeans.)<\/li>\n<li>Start a magazine swap network with your friends.<\/li>\n<li>Always pay your bills on time.<\/li>\n<li>Put a photo or image of what you are saving for (a house, a trip, a car, etc.) on your refrigerator door or in your wallet.
